Ted Dekker’s new book Skin hits stores tomorrow. It is his first release in the “secular” book world. His previous books have been best-selling Christian novels, but his readership has grown and moved beyond just Christians.
As my favorite author of today, I like to compare him to my favorite author of yesterday. He strikes me as the C.S. Lewis of today – more concerned with being a writer who is a Christian than a Christian writer.
Dekker writes extremely fast pased, action oriented books with intriguing characters and plot twists. His books are written from a Christian perspective and carry a spiritual undertone, but they are not “preachy.” His ideas are informed by his faith.
If you are out in Barnes and Nobles or Borders tomorrow, pick up a copy of Skin. You will not be disappointed.
Aaron, did you see the movie Thr3e? What did you think? I didn't see it because it basically got panned. I'm sure it was not as good as the book, but did you like it at all? If not, how did they go wrong?
Yeah, I saw it and took several of my youth opening weekend. They all liked it, probably more than I did.
Here's the thing: it suffered from high expectations from me (because of the book) and a lack of a killer budget. A few special effects shots made me cringe. It's not going on my top 10 favorite movies, but I will buy the DVD.
But I thought critics were excessively harsh. It wasn't nearly as bad as they all made it out to be, several criticisms were completely unfounded: calling it a rip-off of other movies that were made after the book was written, etc.
Many of the reviewers lament the lack of bodies, blood and gore and then claim the movie isn't original enough. "It's not original. It should have gore like all the other horror/thriller movies." They attack the spritual aspect of the movie and then claim the movie is bad pandering to the religious.
Is it a fantastic, top-notch thriller. The book? yes. The movie? not so much. But is it a decent movie to watch on DVD? I think so. It is enjoyable if you like twisting thrillers with spiritual themes.
