Conservatives have often opposed the legal approval of gay marriage because, they argue, it will open the door to redefining marriage as basically any kind of relationship (see Mainstreaming Polygamy), in effect diluting marriage to the point where it means nothing.
Now, we can’t blame gay activists for opening the door that all of the others walk through. However, their push for public validation of their illness has led to groups that now want to actually DO AWAY with marriage altogether. Despite the fact that I hate slippery slope arguments, I do think that this is probably an all or nothing battle going on.
A group of liberal intellectuals and activists has released a statement calling for the nation to transcend contentious debates over same-sex marriage and sexuality by, in effect, abolishing marriage as a social norm and institution.
More of the same from someone who mindlessly hates gays. (Or, why don't you worry about Christian issues, while allowing the rest of the world to do as they please? Particularly when it in no way affects you or your life?)
I am sure I don’t have to tell a small government conservative like you about the dangers of social engineering.
Actually, I think some social engineering is probably necessary.
But your argument is not a bad one.
As long as nobody's engineering your family, right Seeker?
Yes, I believe that even bigots like seeker should have the right to their illness. However, when their sickness affects me I draw the line: gov't should stay out of private relationships, limiting itself to establishing contractual relationships. Individuals can then perform whatever ritual they prefer. That way anti-gay hate groups like christianism and islam can exclude gays without violating our civil rights. And they won't be able to enact their psychoses into law.
Conservatives have often opposed the legal approval of gay marriage because, they argue, it will open the door to redefining marriage as basically any kind of relationship. There are many countries that allow same sex marriage. Last time I checked, the institution of marriage is doing just fine. Here’s one, is it immoral for two atheists to get married since marriage is a “holy” institution with “holy” vows? Wouldn’t Atheists getting married do just as much “damage” to the marriage institution if not more? Yet there is no cry against Atheists marrying though they make up about 5% of our population and much larger populations in other countries. I can anticipate part of the reply… “marriage is between a man and a woman” so mixed gender atheist marriages are okay. Well, Pluto was once a planet and the terminology changed. Our solar system has been redefined but the planets are doing fine despite this.
I don’t understand why conservatives care. If a woman marries a snake in India, does that affect your marriage in any way? Do you feel your marriage is somehow made less than it was because she did?
