Dr. Dobson has went out on another political limb and this time I think he went way too far.
When talking about Fred Thompson’s potential presidential run, Dobson said, “I don’t think he’s a Christian; at least that’s my impression.”
Thompson’s spokesman fired back that the Law and Order actor is a Christian and has been baptized into the Church of Christ.
It gets even worse when a Focus on the Family spokesperson tried to clear it up. He said, “We use that wordóChristianóto refer to people who are evangelical Christians.”
Do that not understand how completely arrogant they sound – determining for all who is a Christian? It is one thing for Christians to evaluate the theology of an individual or church and see if it lines up with Scriptural teaching of what being a Christian means. Within that we have many variations that are considered orthodox. Some are not, and they are viewed as such (Jehovah’s Witness, Mormons).
What we have here is Dobson making a political statement that Thompson is not a Christian because he has no vocalized it enough in the political arena. That is so wrong it is tragic.
Dobson has since issued a “semi-apology”, essentially blaming the media for taking it the wrong way. While I fully understand the media’s tendency to do that, Dobson and his spokesman should know better than to make such inflamatory statements.
The “apology” doesn’t quite wash. Dobson should do the Christian thing here and officially, openly apologize to Thompson and ask for his forgiveness.
