A new theory going around as to why the Democrats staged their stunt (besides being a cheap fundraiser) is they are unhappy with a document being used in “Phase II” of the pre-war intelligence investigation.

The reason being that many quotes are used that mention Saddam’s WMDs and the need to go to war, but no names are listed with the quotes.

This presents a severe problem for the Democrats because they have numerous quotes on the record that mirror Republican quotes on Iraq, WMD’s and the need to go to war.

Powerline has a collection from Bill Clinton, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Sandy “Documents in my pants” Berger, Al Gore, John Kerry, Robert Byrd, Ted Kennedy, Hillary and others. Here is a sampling:

“We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction.” – Sen. Ted Kennedy

“We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country.” – Al Gore

“He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983.” – Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser

“If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction program.” – President Clinton

Right Wing News has another list with some of the same politicians and some different ones including:

“[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq’s refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs.” – From a letter signed by Joe Lieberman, Dianne Feinstein, Barbara A. Milulski, Tom Daschle, & John Kerry among others

“Iraq made commitments after the Gulf War to completely dismantle all weapons of mass destruction, and unfortunately, Iraq has not lived up to its agreement.” – Sen. Barbara Boxer

“There’s no question that Saddam Hussein is a threat… Yes, he has chemical and biological weapons. He’s had those for a long time. But the United States right now is on a very much different defensive posture than we were before September 11th of 2001… He is, as far as we know, actively pursuing nuclear capabilities, though he doesn’t have nuclear warheads yet.” – Wesley Clark

“The debate over Iraq is not about politics. It is about national security. It should be clear that our national security requires Congress to send a clear message to Iraq and the world: America is united in its determination to eliminate forever the threat of Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction.” – Sen. John Edwards

Just because I am feeling generous, how about one more Bill Clinton lie? This one is from The Right Place and about the response to Hurricane Katrina:

“When James Lee Witt ran FEMA, because he had been both a local official and a federal official, he was always there early, and we always thought about that,” Clinton said, referring to FEMA’s head during his 1993-2001 presidency.

That’s not what Jesse Jackson said:

“The Hurricane Floyd disaster was followed by what was judged by many to be a very slow Federal response. Fully three weeks after the storm hit Jesse Jackson complained to FEMA Director James Lee Witt on his CNN program Both Sides Now, “It seemed there was preparation for Hurricane Floyd, but then came Flood Floyd. Bridges are overwhelmed, levees are overwhelmed, whole town’s under water . . . [it’s] an awesome scene of tragedy. So there’s a great misery index in North Carolina.” Witt responded, “We’re starting to move the camper trailers in, It’s been so wet it’s been difficult to get things in there, but now it’s going to be moving very quickly. And I think you’re going to see a — I think the people there will see a big difference over within this next weekend.”

So according to Democrats Saddam was a danger, had WMD’s and needed to be removed. What was their problem with the war again?

And according to Bill Clinton three weeks is being there “early.” I wonder what three days would be?
