Collision documents an interesting friendship on the Atheism debate trail

Collision You've got to hand it to Christopher Hitchens for making the decision to go out of friendly territory to debate Christians on their own turf across the US. Not content with doing a promotion tour for his infamous anti-theist screed God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, he decided to tour with Christian apologist Douglas Wilson.

You can hear some of Wilson's debates at Apolgetics 315, including one with "Hitch," as his atheist fans call him.  You can also visit Richard Dawkins' site to watch a video of a Hitchens / Wilson Debate. Last, and probably best, you can read a six part back and forth email discussion between the two on Is Christianity Good for the World?

But if you really want to see what goes on on the Tour Bus as these two men travel together debating across the country, you should check out the new documentary Collision (some nice preview vids there).

For a mere $14, you can pre-order the video at Amazon: COLLISION: Christopher Hitchens vs. Douglas Wilson.

Europe’s Dark Ages and Islam’s Golden Age – two historic fictions?

Islam Watch has a good article entitled Europe’s Dark Age and Islam’s Golden Age: Two Facets of The Same Fiction?, which discusses the content of the book on the same subject, entitled Holy Warriors.

In the twentieth century, a whole  new body of evidence became available to historians; evidence  unavailable to previous generations of scholars: The evidence of   archaeology. And what archaeology  tells us has been devastating to the  traditional view…..

On the word of the written histories, then, archaeologists expected to find, from Spain to eastern Iran, a flourishing and vibrant culture. An Islamic world of enormous cities endowed with all the wealth of antiquity and the plunder gathered in the Muslim wars of conquest. They hoped to find palaces, public baths, universities and mosques; all richly decorated with marble, ceramic and carved stone.

In fact, they found nothing of the sort.

For a more accurate rendition of history that isn’t colored by the anti-Catholic enlightenment historians or the Muslims trying to pretend that their faith has contributed to humanity, see How Christianity changed the world and The biblical origins of science.

New Obama conspiracy emerging

While birthers are garnering most of the attention, a new fringe break-off group is emerging from the shadows to demand answers to their questions. They are the "afterbirthers."

"All we are asking is that the president produce a sample of his fetal
membranes and vessels—preferably along with a photo of the crowning and
delivery—and this will all be over," said former presidential candidate
and Afterbirthers spokesman Alan Keyes, later adding that his
organization would be willing to settle for a half-liter of maternal
cord plasma.

*Before commenting, please read the source of the "story" or look at the tag for this post. I actually picked up a free hard copy of this paper while I was in DC over the weekend.

Loving one’s neighbor through government programs

William Lane Craig, who usually sticks to apologetics and debates (he is arguably the best living Christian apologist and philosopher), takes on Obamacare in Bearing False Witness.

Craig suggests a few of questions that conservatives need to ask and that need to be seriously discussed:

  1. Is this more efficiently and effectively done through govenment or private charity?
  2. Is the healthcare program going to be so overburdened that it will lead to rationing?  What in the bill prevents this outcome?
  3. It is not important what might be included (Iike abortion), but why is abortion not explicitly EXCLUDED just to prove Obama's claims that these moneys won't be used for abortions?

Obamacare is a fiasco that I hope never passes, and I hope that the death of Ted Kennedy doesn't give it a sympathy boost.  Our great country can NOT go this direction and be fiscally and socially sound.

Promote the general welfare, not PROVIDE.

Tron is coming, but the MCP is here

So, I watched the trailer for Tron Legacy, and am really excited about it.  However, in watching the original (watching it now, actually), I saw the main villain, the Master Control Program (MCP), and I said to myself, "I've seen that picture before." Then I figured it out.  Thanks to a handy morph program, I've created my revelation for you to enjoy.

D.C. Court rules that ex-gays are covered by anti-discrimination laws

Exga As per a news release at PFOX:

The Superior Court of the  District of Columbia has ruled that former homosexuals are a protected class that must be recognized under sexual orientation non-discrimination laws.  The Court held that, under the D.C. Human Rights Act, sexual orientation does not require immutable characteristics.

This is a big deal, especially in schools, where ex-gays are not afforded the same protection and privileges as the GLBT crowd.  It means that liberal school staff and administrators can no longer shut out (and openly despise) this very real minority.  You know, kinda how we can't openly despise gays anymore.  I need to shine up my 'Ex-gay is OK' sticker on my car.

Hearing what people are really saying about their faith

I found this really compassionate up to the part where they say Plastic Jesus.  But maybe they didn’t mean to talk down.  Otherwise, very meaningful.

Sen. Ted Kennedy RIP

Ted Kennedy was passionate about the things he believed. I did not agree with him on virtually any issue, but I respected his desire to implement ideas which he believed would help his nation.

While his death should not cause anyone to change political positions, we all would do well to be as passionate about those things we care deeply about as he was.

My prayers are with the Kennedy family and friends.

Who are the “birthers?”

Well for starters, if it was not obvious enough, they are morons because at least 6% of them don't believe that Hawaii is part of the United States. No word on how many of them believe the World Net Daily story that Obama's MySpace page gives his real age. But looking at the first national poll of the birther movement reveals some interesting data that I didn't expect.
