World Magazine Blog has a post about waterboarding, including a link to an article written by a former Communist defector who defends the practice.

Personally the more I read about this and other similar techniques, the more torn I am about the issue. I see legitimate points that both sides are making. I guess I should take danielg’s stance and let people who are wiser than me decide what is right in this instance.

This is a difficult issue when evaluating every factor involved – the humanity of our enemies, maintaining a higher standard of ethics, saving the lives of innocent victims and our military, stopping future attacks, capturing other terrorists. I do not envy anyone who has to make these decisions for real.

It is easy for us on the sidelines to sit and hurl insults at those making the call, be they the politicians or the interrogators, but they face difficult decisions. Anyone who claims this is an easy choice is fooling themselves.
